Our History

The Consumer Protection Commission was initiated through the legislation of the Price Control Act of 1971. Due to irregularities in pricing for the same goods and services by different providers, the government intervened to set a standard price table in place.This was the first action taken by the government in favor of consumers. The price standardization process was conducted by a committee. This committee later on grew to become the Consumer Protection Commission or CPC as we know it today.

The Bahamas has passed a number of laws and regulations that operate in concert with each other for the protection of consumer rights. These include the following:

  • The Rent Control Act 1975
  • The Price Control Act, 1971
  • The Rent Control Act (Amendment Regulation, 2006)
  • The Consumer Protection Act, 2006
